  2. Standardise your units. Decide now whether a "carton" is a sellable unit or 24 sellable units. Mixing the two is the reason stock counts never reconcile.
  3. Add cost prices. This is the column most spreadsheets don't have, and importing is your one convenient chance to add it. Without cost price there is no margin reporting — ever. Use landed cost: purchase price plus transport plus clearing.
  4. Do a physical count on import day. Import the count, not the spreadsheet's belief about the count. The two are rarely the same, and starting from the true number is worth more than starting quickly.
  5. Reconcile daily for two weeks. Compare the new system's totals against your old method. Investigate gaps while the transactions are recent enough to remember.
  6. Then stop updating the spreadsheet. Keep it read-only for reference. Running both indefinitely gives you two records that disagree and no way to adjudicate.
